UPPER HUTT AFFAIRS

COUNCIL'S FORTNIGHTLY MEETING

The Upper Hutt Borough Council's fortnightly meeting was held last night, when the Mayor (Mr. A. J. M'Curdy) presided. The following councillors were present: C. L. A. Spearman, H. E: Lodge, W. Greig, J. Blewmau, J. M. Beechey (east ward), and J. K. Johnstone, T. R. Jameson, and A. Howell (west ward). A letter was received from the Minister of Railways (the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) suggesting the establishment of District Advisory Boards on railway matters, in order to form a common meeting ground between users of the railways and the Railway Department. The Wellington territory under the two North Island boards would extend from Ohakune southwards, and including Nelson and Picton districts, and the boards would consist of representatives of the various interests and public bodies and representatives from committees set up at other towns within the jurisdiction of the board. After discussion, in which the need for improvement in the Wellington-Upper Hutt service was mentioned, the letter was acknowledged, the Department to be asked if the borough was entitled to representation on the boards, and algo to forward copies of the rules and constitution and the letter to the secretary of the West Ward Electors' Association.

The use of the Borough Council offices was granted to the Hutt Valley Power Board for a polling booth- on Ist December, when the board is to take a loan poll over the whole district..

The question of the Logan Btreet extension was, ■on the motion of Councillor Greig, referred to the Public Services Committee with the view to getting an estimate of the cost of connecting the Main road to Logan street. On Friday next members of the council will meet. . Hutt County Council representatives to discuss financial adjustments between the two bodies.

Letters to the number of fourteen figured in the late correspondence, but the Standing Orders were not suspended to receive them, strong comment being made by the Mayor and Councillor Greig on the length of the list.
