CANADIAN SALMON

VITAL PROBLEM SOLVED

AN ALL-BRITISH "RUN."

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

VANCOUVER, 3rd October.

That extraordinary dispensation of Providence, by which the salmon, after four years ia the- open soa, conies back to the spawning ground by the identical route by which ho travelled on his outward journey, is being utilised by the Canadian authorities to -settle a long-stauding dispute between them and the United States. : The serious depletion of salmon from the Fraser Eiver, most famous of all salmon streams, has been traced to the depredations of American fishing outfits at the mouth of the Straits of- Juan de Fuca, by which the salmon, returning to spawn, enter, as the nearest route from the sea to their spawning grounds. Despite protests from Canada, United States fishermen take them from the water ia tens of thousands.

Working secretly over a period of years, Canadian fishery experts have solved the problem. For some years, the hatcheries along the lower reaches of the Fraser Kiver have been retaining the eggs of fish which have been known to travel to the Fraser only through Canadian waters, that is, entering from the Pacific north of Vancouver Island, instead of to the south, where they enter American water, tho international boundary being through the centre of the straits. The fish thus reared have begun to return in large quantities, and have accounted for phenomenal catches during the past week. It is hoped to establish an allCanadian salmon run in a big way by this means.
