The withdrawal of Manfred, the outstanding public fancy for the Melbourne Cup, came as; a: sensational surprise. The scratching has hit the public heavily.

MELBOURNE, Ist November. Heroic was scratched for the Melbourne Cup at 3.30 p.m. To-day's scratchings of Manfred and Heroic created a sensation in Turf circles. Manfred's leg filled after Saturday, and an examination of Heroic to-day proved conclusively that he would be unable to run.
