ST. PATRICK'S COLLEGE

In the past St. Patrick's College has held 41 sports meetings. Through that long period of years the sports at the end of each year have always been looked forward to with much keenness, and performances, too, have been of a high order. A glance' at the re- -. cords gives ample proof of the quality , of past pupils at the school. St. Patnek's College ha» produced many fine athletes. Although a number of last year's champions aro not attending the college this year, the performances of the young runners at tho gathering on the Basin Reserve yesterday provided evidence enough that the high standard of athletic ability established in the past is being well maintained. . There were good fields in all events, and competition was very keen. NOTABLE PERFORMERS. Among the junior competitors, Roberts, B. Phillips, and O'Connell stood out prominently. Phillips, who is only fourteen years of age, is a very fine high jumper. He won the junior high jump with the bar at 4ft 6in —a fine performance. The college has a fine young sprinter in A. Welplyj who was a very outstanding figure throughout the 'meeting. "Welply did very well in the 'intermediate sprint events, and also resplendid performances in the ■enior races. In the morning Welply won the first heat of the 100 yards handicap under 16$ years from scratch, and against the wind, in 11 2-ssec. He was first in the 100 yards grand handicap (open) from 3yds, and also gained first place in the 220 yards handicap under . 16i years, from the scratch mark, in 25sec. The latter event provided an interesting finish. Welply, who was compelled to run round the outside of the field for the greater part of the way, Blade a great effort when nearing the tape, and shot to the front to win in the last few yards by a clear yard. In the afternoon Welply added further . lnstre to his performances. At the last few annual gatherings of Bt. Patrick's College N. Goodson has been a prominent performer. He ■ was called upon to concede big handicaps yesterday,'but he proved his worth .in the hundred yards championship, in which he easily outpaced the other competitors. NEW HALF-MILE EECOKD. A fresh record was made by B. Leech in the senior 880 yards handie»p. Banning from scratch Leech returned 2min 4 3-ssec for the distance, which dipped 3 2-ssee off the timo registered for the event last year by E. "Anderson. Leech went very close to Betting new figures for the 440 yards grand handicap. The ' record for the distance, 54sec, is held by T. Eelly, and Leech's time yesterday was only a second outside that. Had he had ■omeone to extend him coming up the Btraight he probably would have created a now record. Some idea of the , quality of Leech may be gained from "the fact that in the 880 yards event be ran the first quarter-mile in 54sec. The sports were well patronised in the afternoon. Among those present j were Archbishop Eedwood, Archbishop O'Shea, Father Cullen, and Father Gil- ' bert, rector of the college. THE BESULTS.
