WARM AND MOIST

OCTOBER'S WEATHER.

Rainfall during Ottober was 62 per cent, above the average, rain falling in measurable quantities on ho fewer than twenty days.. The total fall for the month was 6.72 in, over four inches of the total falling between the 7th and 10th inclusive. The biggest fall was 2.03 in, on the Bth. During the month there were just over 132 hours of bright sunshine, which is 25J hours belc.vr the average and 32 per cent, of the possible. There were six days without any recorded sunshine. In spite of this, the month's temperature was one degree above the average. The highest reading was 69.2 degrees, on the 28th, and the lowest 36.1 degrees, on the morning of the 13th. The earth temperatures increased from 54 degTees at one foot depth and 53.8 degrees at three foot to 59.4 and 58.7 degrees respectively. This is higher than the average, and accounts for the plentiful growth which took place during the month in spite of the comparative absence of sun. Northerly winds greatly predominated, with a cold spell at the end of the first fortnight, when slight snow fell. Only one alight frost was recorded, that being on the morning of the 14th. Barometric pressure was on the whole below the average, as was also the daily average velocity of the wind. This was 251 miles, 34 miles per day less than the average. Gales, howeVer, were recorded on six days, the highest velocity being attained on the morning of the 12th. The wind then was steadier and not so gusty as that experienced last Sunday.
