ROAD CYCLING

POET NICHOLSON CLUB,

The Port Nicholson Amateur Koad Cycling Club's function at Scott's Rooms last week was enjoyed by v large gathering of cyclists and other enthusiasts. Mr. G. Harrison (president of the club) was in the chair. The chairman referred to the great strides which cycling had made in the last few years, and as far as the new road cycling club was concerned, a very large umouut of credit was duo to tho members of the trade "for their assistance. Mr. Harrison expressed thanks for. their liberal support. Messrs. Phelan, Johnston, and Hewgill, in reply, promised continued support next .season. .' : ' . Mr. Webb congratulated the club on the great strides it had made since its inception, in June last. The result of the activities must have been .gratifying to those who formed the club. Mr. G. S. Bright, : club .captain,, stated .that the club was purely for winter sport. The membership had increased from 15 to '40 in three | months. The . sportsmanship throughout | the club was really splendid. That the club had been a benefit to cycling in Wellington he had no doubt. He was now anxiously waiting to see how the members performed on the track. Mr. Bright also referred to the great interest which the riders of a few years back took in the present-day riders. This was tvue sportsmanship indeed. They knew the value of the sport, and could not really and truly leave it alone. Messrs. Phelan and C. Thompson, who replied on behalf of the veterans, gave some interesting reminiscences and valuable advice. Mr. A. C. Kitto, of the Wellington Centre, expressed the hope that the time was not far distant when Wellington would have a proper cycling track, such as they had in Christehurch and Auckland. He thought that the Newtown Park would be ideal for the purpose. It was possible that;the track could also be used by motor-cyclists. The lighting of the Basin Reserve for night meetings was at present under consideration. Mr. Kitto complimented the club on the progress it had made. .-..-■■■ During the evening a Points Memorial Cup, a handsome gift to the Port Nicholson Club, by' Mr. J. Corbett, in remembrance of his late brother, was displayed, together with its six miniatures. Messrs. Andrews, .Wright, and Vondersloot contributed items during the evening.
