THE VICTORIAN DERBY

(United Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received Ist November, 1.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day.

Commenting on the Victorian Derby, the "Sydney Morning Herald" says:— "With the possible exception of Limerick, whose preparation was materially affected as a result of an injured heel, no1 fault could be found with the condition of tho candidates, but the New Zealand gelding stepped a little timidly at first. Rampion, who had the inside running, was one of the smartest away, and he was always in front. Although many were not impressed with his per formancefor the reason that Thracian had made him stretch out in the run home, and was only beaten by threequarters of a length, it must be remem bored that Rampion made all the running, and the time was good under the existing conditions, being only one sec ond outside of Manfred's record for the race. Tho surprise of the race w:|; the fine display by Thracian, who was never further back than third. Coming into the straight Limerick made a smart move, and it was so dazzling that it looked as if ho would come on and win. His effort, however, ceased almost as sensationally as it began, and he lost ground in the run to the post." . The "Daily Telegraph" says: "Rampion made all the running to the turn, but had to be ridden right out to stall off Thracian. Limerick's form was so ordinary that his Melbourne Cup prospects may bo considered far from bright. There was very little dash in his finishing run." The "Herald" says: "Tho Cantala Stakes provided one of tho most exciting finishes seen for some time, and gave Melbourne racegoers an opportunity of witnessing the brilliancy of Amounis, who put up a grat performance."
