HOMING PIGEONS
The Wellington Homing Pigeon Society opened ita flying season with a race from Hunterville, a distance of 103 miles air line. Twenty lofts with a total of 186 birds competed; this constitutes a record for,the society for number of birds sent for liberation. The day was fine, with a strong favourable wind. The first bird's velocity was 1506 yds per minute, and only seconds separated the other birds. • The results were: —Mr. W. Thomas's blue chequer hen 247, 1506 yds per mm., 1; Mr. W. J. Ferkins's blue chequer cock 756 and Mr. J. O'Dca's blue bar pied hen 280 tied with 1503 yds per minute for second place; A. Priddle and Son's blue eh. cock "Off Chance" 188, 1500.5 yds per minute, 3; Mr. G. Wilson's blue chequer cock 727 and Mr. G-. Geary's blue chequer cook 769,1500 yds £er minute, tied for fourth place. A trophy for new members was won by Mr. J. O'Dea. There will be races each week during the season, and next Saturday's will be from Waiouru. The New Zealand Grand National will bo flown on Cth November.
Messrs. E. A. Wilson and Co. will sell one truck of household furniture and sundries in their rooms, 137, Lambton quay, to-morrow, at 2 p.m.
Messrs. T. C. Dawe and Co. will sell by auction, at their mart, 57, Ghuznee street, a quantity of household furniture, and also the contents of a fish and chips shop, at 2 p.m., to-morrow.
