WAREHOUSE BURGLED

TH€FT IN VICTORIA STREET

AUCKLAND BRANCH ALSO

VISITED,

Goods of considerable value and £11 in petty cash were stolen by burglars, who gained entrance to the premises of Messrs. George aad Doughty, Ltd., warehousemen, Victoria stree.t, on Thursday" night. Numerous business. premises have been burgled within tho last month, and the indications are that an expert gang is at work. Members of Messrs. George and Doughty's staff noticed when they arrived at the warehouse early yesterday morning that the guard over the safe keyhole had been prised off, but when the safe was opened it was found that the contents had not been interfered with. Petty cash amounting to £11 had, however, been removed from its hiding-place in a small receptacle used for inspecting the mechanism of the chute connection for transmitting accounts. Further inspection showed that the office had been thoroughly ransacked, and a traveller's suitcase had apparently been taken to remove the spoil. Downstairs, many articles of clothing were missing. The safe in Mr. Doughty's office had not been interfered with. It appears that the thieves entered and left the premises through a lavatory window. By a most singular coincidence, Messrs. George and Doughty's Auckland warehouse was burgled on Tuesday night, goods to the value of at least £20 being taken. It is impossible to estimate at. this stage the value of the goods taken from the Wellington warehouse.
