SHOPLIFTING
ANOTHER WOMAN CONVICTED.

AUCKLAND, This Day. Another shoplifter, ' the second this week, the other being the case of a wealthy Eemuera woman, appeared this morning on a charge of stealing a packet of Aspros, valued Is 6d, from Eendell'g, Ltd., and three boxes powder, valued 12s, from George Court's. The accused, Mary Lila Thomas (35), pleaded guilty to the first charge, but not guilty to the second. The Senior-Detective said that the accused was observed by one of Bendell's assistants taking the Aspros off "the shelf. On the arrival of.the detective, the woman admitted the theft, and in her bag were three unwrapped boxes of powder, the possession of wnich she could not i explain, and she became stubborn and insulting. Her husband was a decent working man. The accused showed signs of liquor. Counsel said that the husband stressed the fact that his wife was a most estimable woman, except that she took drink occasionally. Last year he had been unable to prevent her taking liquor. On the prosecution seeking a remand to call evidence on the second charge, counsel put in a plea ,of guilty and said that the accused would leave the. matter in the Magistrate's hands.
Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: ".These women have had ample warning. Why, only a few days ago a woman got fourteen days for shoplifting." The accused was fined £5 or fourteen days on the first charge, and admitted to probation on the second charge. A prohibition order was also issued. .
