JOY-RIDERS ESCAPE

PURSUED BY CONSTABLE.

Joy-riders had a narrow escape from arrest last evening, when, at about 9 o clock a car driven by a young man, who had a girl with him, crashed in a verandah support near James Smith's corner. The car, which belongs to Mr Charles Rough, had been taken from its parking place in Waring-Taylor street A crowd soon gathered, and the uotqmtous policeman demanded an explanation from the youthful driver His only answer was to throw tho car into gear and drive off towards Courtenay place at an alarming speed. Although taken aback for a moment, the constable was soon in hot pursuit, but he was unable to overtake the car, and for the time being at least tho fugitive had eluded tho law.

So far as is known the car his not yet been recovered.
