AUSTRALIANS STRIKE HARD

A CENTURY TO RYDER

FREEMAN GETS SIX WICKETS.

(United Press Association.—Copyright.) (Reuter'a Telegram.).

(Received 27th August, 11 a.m.)

LONDON, 26th August.

The match between the Australians and a team representing Kent, at Canterbury, wag resumed this morning before 15,000 people. The weather was warm and sunny, after heavy rain overnight, but the wickpt was good. Beslee and Ashdown opened the bowline for Kent to Taylor and Collins, and after a couple of overs Beslee found a length and had the batsmen in difficulties. When the total seoro was only 14 Taylor was taken easily in the slips. Macartney at the outset was streaky, but this phase soon passed and ho opened out, pulling and driving Freeman superbly, but when the partnership had put on 50 runs, which took only forty minutes, he mistimed a stroke and was well taken at deep-point. Collins meantime had scored 21 in an hour. Gregory, after giving a chance when he was 6, was caught in tho longficld, the board then reading 86 runs for three wickets.

Collins continued to be sound and unperturbed. He hit Woolloy to leg attractively, and drove Freeman vigorously, though Freeman was spinning the ball effectively, which was sufficient to keep the batsmen quiet. With the appearance of Andrews, however, the score mounted rapidly, and frequent changes of bowling had no effect in j separating the batsmen till' the total ' was 208, when Andrews let pass a ball from Beslee, which broke in and took his off stump. He had batted for an hour and twenty-eight minutes, during which he hit eight fours, and was strong on the offside, while his driving was bright and stylish. BUNS COME SLOWLY. Buns then came slowly. Kyder had a life when, at 5, Hubble failing to gather in the ball when Byder was two yards out of the crease. Collins was unlucky in going out to a ball from G. Bryan, which kicked sharply, and Collins, unable to get his bat away from the ball, skied it into the hands of Hubble. Collins had batted for 3hrs 26min, his score including nine fours. The total was then 224 for five wickets. Bichardson and Hendry fell cheaply for the addition of only seven runs.

Ryder continued to drive powerfully, scorning anything but, fours, and hit up 35 runs in three overs. The Kent total of 321 runs was passed as the result of a boundary overthrow, and Ryder continued dashingly, sending balls from Hardinge to the boundary three times off successive balls, and reached his hundred in an hour and a half. Eight minutes later, however, he was well held at mid-on after a free and spectacular innings, during which he hit two sixes and seventeen fours. He gave three chances, including two of being stumped. His partnership with Ellis yielded 140 runs in an hour and three minutes. Tho board then showed 371 for eight wickets.

Ellis, who had given- valuable assistance to Ryder, had two lives, when at 23 and 35, and eventually was easily stumped when going forward to Freeman. The following are the detailed scores: KENT.
