FRANCE AND JAPAN END EVEN

In the final series of the Davis Cup, between France, winners of the European zone, and Japan, winners of the American zone, on the first day's play honours are oven. Henri Cochet (Franco) defeated T. Tawara (Japan), 1-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-2. In the match, which first soeinod to promise to be slow and only slightly interesting, but later offered Cochet an opportunity to display his splendid staying power and ability to bo both accurate and brilliant at the not and overhead, the Frenchman literally overwhelmed Tawara. Cochet lost the first two 'Sets because he was erratic and inaccurate, but so out-tired and outplayed his opponent in the last three sets that there seemed no doubt of his superiority. Tak£i;hi Harada (Japan) defeated Rene Lacoste (Franco), 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 9-7.
The winners of the present series will have tho honour of challenging the United States for the Davis Cup. Last year tho French team defeated Australia in the final. Patterson beat Lpcoste, 0-3, 64, G-2; Borotra beat Anderson, 6-4, 6-3, 8-6; Borotra beat Patterson, 4-0, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3; Lacosto and Borotra beat Patterson and Hawkes, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 1-6, 10-8. In tho challenge round with the United States, the holders defeated the Frenchmen by 5 games to 0. Tilden beat Borotra, 4-6, 6-0, 2-6, 0-7, 6-4; Tilden beat Lacoste, 3-6, 10-12, 8-6, 7-5, 6-2; W. Johnston boat Lacoste, 6-1, 6-1, 6-8, 6-3; Johnston beat Borotra, 6-1, 6-4, 6-0; Richards and Williams beat Lacoste and Borotra, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.
