The Mayor of Auckland, Mr. G. BailJon, ia at present visiting Wellington.

The Bey. Archdeacon Taylor and the Revs. J. Fcron and C. Perry arrived from Lyttelton by the Maori this morning, Tho Eev. J. Beaufort has been appointed chaplain to H.M.S. Philomel. Mr. Beaufort was for some time on tho Hauraki Plains, and moro recently he was stationed at Raglan.

Mr. Frank Hutchens, the well-known New Zealand pianist, has been elected president of the Musical Association of New South "Wales, following Mr. Cyril Monk in that distinguished office.

Major W. Watt, formerly of the Royal Naval Air Force, and Commander of tho airship R26, is visiting Gisborne and was a guest at the Rotary Olub luncheon on Monday.

Mr. J. Merle Davis, general secretary of the Institute of Pacific Relations, has arrived in Wellington from Christchurch in continuation of a tour round the Pacific in connection with the affairs of the institute.

Members of the City and Suburban Highways Board had several complimentary things to say of the courteous and able manner in which Mr. 0. R. Searle, who is shortly leaving the Corporation service to take up other secretarial work, had carried out his duties as clerk to tho board, and to mark their appreciation further voted him a quite pleasing sum for his special services.

At the annual smoke concert of the South African War Veterans' Association last night, Mr. Simpson, past Dominion president of the association, was presented with the badge of the association as a recognition of valuable past services. The work of the secretary of the S.A.W.V.A. (Mr. J. H. E. Tilling) was the subject of unreserved eulogies by the Dominion president (Mr. J. J. Clarke) at the annual smoke concert last night, and he was presented with a token of esteem from all the New Zealand branches of the association.

The death is reported of Mr. Edward Horatio Waddington, who left Masterton recently to live a retired life at Paekakariki. Mr. Waddington was born at Wakefield, Yorkshire, England, and came to New Zealand in 1873. He was for some time in the employ of the Bank of New Zealand, and later established a general agency business in Masterton. Among the secretaryships he hold were those of the Masterton and Opaki Jockey Club, North Wairarapa Gun Club, Ancient Order of Foresters, United and Ancient Order of Druids, Charitable Aid Board, and the North Wairarapa Benevolent Trustees. Deceased only recently retired from the management of thes Masterton Printing Company, and was for years a director of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society. Ho was also a prominent member of the Masterton Tennis Club, and an ardent worker in St. Matthew's Church, and local institutions. Mr. Waddington left a widow and grown-up family.

Mr. H. E. Combs, who recently relinquished his position as secretary of the New Zealand Eugby Union, was presented last evening with tokens of esteem from tho footballers of tho Dominion aiid from the Management Committee of the N.Z.B.U. In making the presentations, Mr. S. S. Dean (ciiairman of the Management Committee of tho N.Z.E.U.) referred to the valuable services rendered to the game by Mr. Combs during the years in which ho had been secretary of tho Now Zealand Union. The hope was expressed that ho would look back with pleasure on tho years given in the service of the game, and that his co-operation and help would not be lost in furthering the interests of the game in the future. Other members of the committee also paid tribute to Mr. Combs's services for the game. In thanking members for tho tokens and good wishes, Mr. Combs stated that he had felt it an honour to be secretary of the working head of the biggest athletic organisation in New Zealand, and he relinquished his position reluctantly. His connection' with the game had by no means ceased.
