NEW ZEALAND POTATOES EXPORTED TO AUSTRALIA DUTY MAY.'BE INCREASED. (United Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 3rd August, 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. As the result of representations by tho Tasmanian and Victorian potato growers, the Tariff Board in Melbourne to-day is considering the advisability of increasing the duty on imported potatoes. The "Herald" says that the agents view tho possible outcome of the inquiry with considerable perturbation. It is pointed out that tho increase can only 1)0 aimed at New Zealand potatoes, of which, in consequence of a small crop throughout the Commonwealth, large quantities have been imported during the present season. One agent says that the height to which prices would have soared, had no New Zealand potatoes ben forthcoming, was a matter of speculation, but they would have been carried beyond the reach of most people. The price of New Zealand potatoes was reasonable, and therefore they were being purchased by many in preference to other varieties.
