PUBLIC WORKS PORTFOLIO
MR. K. S. WILLIAMS MENTIONED.
When announcing bis second instalment of Cabinet readjustments, the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. J. G. Coates) stated his intention of relinquishing the portfolio' of Public Works, and in a speech at Taumarunui he said that it was difficult to separate this portfolio from land.' From Mr. Coates's Taumarunui statement it was thought in some quarters that he might hand over Public Works to the Minister of Lands (the Hon. A. D. M'Lcod). To-day a Press Association message was received from Gisborne saying that it was authoritatively stated that Mr. K. S. Williams, M.P. for Bay of Plenty, had been offered and had accepted, the portfolio of Public Works. Before the Prime Minister's speech at Taumarunui Mr. Williams had been frequently mentioned as a likely new Minister of Public Works. Mr. Williams is at present in Wellington, but when it was mentioned to him to-day that perhaps ho might be the new Minister he made a non-committal reply. v The Gisborne telegram was referred to the Prime Minister for confirmation, but he said _at he knew nothing about it. He had no statement to make.
