EDUCATION COUNCIL

PROPOSED HIGH SCHOOL FOR

ROTORUA,

The Education Council continued its sitting to-day, Dr. E. Marsden, assistant Director of Education, presiding in the absence of Mr. J. Caughley. The first item on the order paper concerned the conversion of the Hastings Technical High School into a secondary school. The discussion was taken in committee, a motion finally being passed to the effect that the council endorsed the Minister's action but regretted that it had not been consulted. The transference of the management of the technical schools at Akaroa, Fairlie, and Pleasant Point from local boards to the Education Board was agreed to; action in respect to Balcluthn, Kaiapoi, Temuka, and Waimate was deferred. It was stated that in some of these cases the classes had lapsed altogether, in others they were very sparsely attended. It was agreed to recommend the establishment of a combined junior and senior high school at Rotorua. It had been suggested that the locality would be an admirable one for experimenting in the direction of providing such high school education for the Maori race. A general scheme for the control of secondary schools came up for consideration. It is to be circulated amongst those authorities concerned and reconsidered in its entirety at » later date.
