CHOOSING THE OFFICERS.
Several meetings of the Finance Committee of the City Council have been held to consider the selection of a new City Engineer and a new Town Clerk. The original very numerous applications were reduced in the ease of English and Canadian applications by the council's London agents, Messrs. Preece, Cardew, and Ryder, to something under 40. Australian and New Zealand applications were considered *by the Finance Committee direct. The Mayor (Mr. C. J. B. Norwood) stated this morning that the Finance Committee has selected four applications for the Town Clerk's position and three for that-of City Engineer. It is proposed to call a special meeting of the council next Tuesday at 4 p.m., to endeavour to still further narrow the applicants down and to consider recommendations to bo brought down by the Finance Committee.
