TRACKING THE BUSH
TRAMPING CLUB'S ACTIVITIES
TAUHERENIKAU VIA SMITH'S CREEK.
Having reached years of discretion (soven), the Tararua Tramping Club has incorporated itself under the Incorporated Societies Act, 1908. After a financial purging,, the membership roll totals 260.
The annual report indicates many activities, social as well as tramping. During tho year under review trackconstructing work was confined to the Kaitoke-Smith's Creek route. "Aided with grants obtained from the Acclimatisation Society, the Eorestry Department, and our own club, a subsidy was obtained from the Government, and the Public TrVorks Department organised a gang under our friend Mr. J. H. Gibbs, which.succeeded, with the money available, in re-forming the balance of the track right down. Smith's Creek to the Tauherenikau. Mr. Gibbs and his gang made an excellent job of this piece of the track, and there is now an easy and unmistakable track right through to tho Smith's Creek hut. Ail offer of trees for the native section of the Botanical Gardens was gladly accepted by the Eeserves Committee of the City Council, and your committee made arrangements for these to be supplied to the Director of Eeserves in accordance with the numbers and specimens desired. Supplies of special Alpine plants were also sent, at the request of the Internal Affairs Department, to Dunedin. Information has been supplied to those interested in tramping in both Christchuich and Auckland, and in both these places flourishing clubs have been formed, which have taken as their guide the rules and methods of our club." The committee expresses the thanks of the club to thoso who have assisted tho club during the year, and particularly mentions all who allow members tho right of way over their properties and oji occasions the use of their huts and wharcs. Mr. and Mrs. Webber and family showed great kindness to Kapiti parties, as did Mr. aud Miss S. Hanlon to a Putangirua Pinnacles (Palliser Bay) party. Tho social committee's gatherings have been well attended, sometimes packed. "A bookcase-cupboard and other necessaries have been purchased, and, aided by a substantial donation from Mr. Jim Murphy, it is intended to install a fairly comprehensive library of suitable books and periodicals. A number of social gatherings have been arranged by the social committee during the year, and have resulted in an increase in their credit balance, which is earmarked for the purpose of acquiring a clubhouse."
