Mr. Luther, Burbank, who died at Santa Eoaa, California, at the age of 77, was known all over the world for the. variety and success of the experi-ments-he conducted.in the production of new fruits and flowers. Some of the new forms he originated were the thornless cactus, a stoneless.plum, and one with the flavour of a pear; a dahlia with the odour of a magnolia; a lily with the scent of a Parma violet; a white blackberry; blackberries without thorns; onions without odour; a black rose; a red sunflower; and a host of new varieties of plums, prunes, apples, pears, peaches, nuts, berries, flowers, and grasses. Mr. Burbank loved his work, and spent 14 hours a day at it even when 70.
