NORTHLAND SCHOOL
QUEEN CARNIVAL.
A very enthusiastic carnival which has been running in the Northland district for the past few weeks culminated in a Carnival Day, which was declared open by Sir John Luke.. A procession headed by the Miraraar Brass Band, marched up Northland road tathe school amidst great '.enthusiasm. The band contributed'a very fine programme of music during the afternoon/ / Lady Luke judged the fancy costumes, of which there-were quite a number, and finding too many good ones for the committee's six prizes, she and Sir John very generously donated .six more as special I-prizes. • "... .; " ; .;. The following were the winners:—Poster, Zona Willis, Fred Roser; special, Teddy Newman. Original, Gladys Roser, Freddy Burket; specials, Bob Roger, Roger Roser/ Fancy, Monica Mawson, Joe Akel; specials, Lilian Morris, Marie. Nixon, Mar- | garet Edwards. . , t Sir John and Lady Luke, accompanied by the chairman and-Mrs. Nichollg, then visited the' various stalls and side-shows, and expressed keen interest. j . The carnival was a thorough success in every way, due-entirely to the efforts of the various Queen Committees and their supporters. The object-of the carnij val was ,to raise funds for improvements to the school grounds. The Queen candiI dates were:—lnfants, Red Queen; Little Mona Psrry; Standards I. and 11., Blue Queen, Miss Lily Akel; Standards 111. and IV., Pink Queen, Miss. Betty Fergussou; Standards V. arid .V 1.,.. Gold Queen, Miss Lilian Thompson. The results of the.voting were as follow:—Blue Queen, 5568; Gold Queen, 5296; Pink Queen, 4818; Red Queen, 4696. " ■ The coronation ceremony was held in St. Anne's Hall on 28th and 29th April, the hall on each occasion being too small to accommodate all those who wished to see th,e ceremony. , Sir John Lxjke remarked that Miss Lake,; the infant, mistress, was deserving of the utmost praise for the splendid way the whole ceremony-was carried .out. He had T>een present at several snch functions, and he could say without fear of contradiction that the general sotting and performance was superior to any others he had Been. A very amusing burlesque was staged by the members of the school committee. ■ Mr. Hownrth took the' opportunity to make a presentation to Mr. Simpson (late assistant-master), on behalf of the scholars. Mr. Simpson suitably responded. The following contributed .to the musical part of the programme: Misses - Lottie Rastell, Violet Collett, Lilian Thompson, Messrs. K. Rogers, J. Hunt, and Anderson. Accompanists: Mesdarries Kearney and Yoeman. ..
