BERLIN FOLLOWS LONDON
"FAUST" IN MODERN DRESS NOT SO GtfOD AS "HAMLET."
(United Press Association.—Copyright.) (Australian-Now Zealand Cable Assn.) BERLIN, 9th April. Following a production of "Hamlet" in modern dress in London, the Volksbuhne Theatre, Berlin, has presented Goethe's "Faust," eliminating mediaevalisni. Faust is robed as a university proctor or wears a dinner jacket. Mephistopheles wave'a an opera hat at the widow Martha Gretclien's home, which is a modern suburban villg. Critics express the opinion that the Gretehen tragedy is thus robbed of its ethical foundation, as it deals with problems of a definite historical period, unlike "Hamlet," which is timeless in subject matter. ■
