CHESS

. . ♦— — ■•-." ■ TOWN V. COUNTRY I ' ■" t Messrs. F. J. Brooker ana F. K. Kelllng, two local enthusiasts, have for seven years past organised a team of Wellington tourists to play at Palmerston North during the Easter holidays.' By way of returning their visits a team from Palmerston North, which included four members of the Masterton Chew Club, paid an Easter visit to Wellington and played a side drawn mostly from the Working Men's Club and the Ngalo Chess Club. This two-round contest was played in the chess room of the Working Men's Club. In the unavoidable absence of the club's president, Mr. A. E. Ballard, Mr. F. J. Brooker, chairman of the Wellington Chess' League, extended a hearty welcome to the visitors. He voiced the general desire that the Palmerston North chess players would enjoy their first match in the Empire City, and that a regular Town v. Country fixture on a large scale would be inaugurated. After a happy response by Mr. T. A. Morinc, the president of the Palmerston North Chess Club, the pairing was announced, and the 20 "mimic battles" were soon in progress. A very/ enjoyable contest ended in favour of the city representatives by the small. margin of four games (23 to 19). Two local players, Messrs. Barnes and M'Lein, defaulted in the second round, and extra games were therefore arranged at boards 1 and 19, in order to minimise disappointment.
