: ♦ ■' . '• THE FIRST GAMES UNITED (EAETIHI) v. SELWYIf. The first Kugby matches of the Mason \ were played at Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon. United (Raetihi) met and defeated a team from the Wellington Sislwyn Club by 10 points to 8. United had the wind and sun behind them in the first spell, and Boon after the «tart M'Leod opened the scoring account' with a" try, ■which was not converted. Selwyn ioon evened matters up with .a try from,* scrum. Before half-time Heise and Brown scored further tries for the visitors, and one of these was converted by Fanant. After half-time Foster scored a try, and this was followed up by another/try by Panant, the same player converting. The game ended: United, 16; Selwyn, 8. Mr. D. Calcinai was referee. The second match was between Wellington Marist and Wanganui Marat, the local side securing a win by 12 t0.8.. Holts opened the local team's account with a try, but Wanganui secured the lead per medium of a converted try by Barry, Corliaa adding the minor points. Just before half-time Hall kicked a penalty goal for Wellington, making the half-time , wore 6-5. Crotty scored for Wanganui soon after play was resumed, but penalty goals by Hall and Griffen gave Wellington-the lead. There was no further scoring, the game ending: Wellington, 12; Wanganui, 8. ;
