FATAL CAR SMASH
ONE PERSON KILLED
TWO OTHERS INJURED
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. A motor-car smash, in which the driver was killed and one passenger severely injured; and another passenger escaped practically unhurt, occurred at 8.30 last evening on the Manukau road, Epsom. The names of the killed and injured are:— Killed. Mr. Thomas Meachen, assistant locomotive foreman, Railways Department. ■ . s . Injured. Mr. "W. O. Ennis, staff superintendent Railway Department, Wellington; injuries to the scalp and back, and shock, \ Mr. Robert Carroll, aged 22, slight injuries to the hand. Mr. Meaehen was the owner, of the car, a five-seater, which was being driven along the Mahukau road. The roadway had become greasy owing to light rain, and as the car slowed down to allow the passengers of a tram to alight it hit a post on the kerb, and, spinning right round, met the post again with a terrific impact. The car was practically cut in half. The driver, who was killed outright, sustaining terrible injuries. After first aid, Mr. Ennia was conveyed to a private hospital, where it was reported his injnries were not serious. The remaining passenger, Mr. Robert Carroll, was able to proceed to his home after the_ dressing of a minor injury. I Mr. Ennis stated his only recollection in regard to the accident was the sudden grinding of the brakes as.they approached the tramcar, and then nothing more. Mr. Ennis was lieutenantcolonel in the Pioneer Battalion during the war.
