Mr. F. T. M. Kissell, Chief Electrical Engineer, Public Works Department, left for Dunedin last night to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers, Mr. Kissel is accompanied by Mrs. Kissel.

A Press Association message from Christchurch states that Major-General R. Young was farewelled by the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association last night, congratulated on his promotion to the position of General Officer Commanding the Forces, and presented with a fiadge of life membership.

Mr. Dickson, Resident Engineer of the Public Works Department at Nelson, ,\vaa farewelled by the combined staffs of Nelson and Blenheim, prior to his departure to take up his duties in the Auckland office of the Department. A presentation was made him as a mark of their respect and esteem.

Mr. E. E. Herron, general manager of the Municipal Milk Supply Department, has been granted four weeks' leave of absencl, the period to be increased by an additional two weeks if the Melbourne City Council desires his services to report upon the question of establishing a municipal, milk supply for Melbourne.

Mr.: G. H. Scott, president of the New Zealan^ Association of British Manufacturers and Agents, leaves Wellington on the 16th inst. on an extended visit to the Old Country. At the annual meeting of the association last evening, Mr. Scott was presented by members of the association with a Prince rug. ,

The Hon.F .J. Rolleston, Minister of Defence, left to-day for Auckland. On Saturday.he will open a new bridge over the Waikoukou River at Waimnku, 26 miles north of Auckland. That afternoon he will attend the Muriwai sports, and will return on Saturday night to Auckland. On Sunday afternoon he will unveil a soldiers' war memorial at Northcote, at which ceremony the Minister of Education (the Hon. Sir James Parr) will also gpeak. On .Monday Mr.. Eolleston will be engaged in Auckland on departmental business. He will probably leave Auckland in the evening for Wellington.

The death took place on Tuesday of Mr. Richard Brown, bookseller, Willis street, a well-known and highly-respoct-ed citizen. The late , Mr. Brown was formerly a member of the staff of Messrs. Lyon and Blair, and later joined the firm of Messrs. Brown and Thomson, booksellers and prin-' ters. For some years past he was head of the firm of Richard Brown aDd Son, Willis street, and was widely known in commercial, circles in ' the city. He was for a considerable time an elder of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, and took a special interest in the Sunday school connected with that church. The late Mr. Brown is survived by a widow and two sons.

Mr. P. D. Hoskins, assistant accountant at the G.P.O. Savings Bank and Accounts Branch, who is retiring after thirty-five years' service, was honoured at a gathering of the G.P.O. staff yesterday afternoon. The career of Mr. Hoskins, said Mr. H. D. Edwards (Controller), in presenting the retiring officer with a well-filled wallet on behalf of the Wellington staff and Accountants ' Branch officials throughout the Dominion, was an example to every member .of the staff. In reply, Mr. Hoskins said that, although he was retiring from the service, he intended to enter commercial life on his own account. He referred to the happiness of his relations with the staff. He was also entertained by sections of the ladies' staff.
