HER FOURTH WIN

PEGGY'S GOOD SHOWING

LOCAL SANDERS CUP TRIALS.

The fourth trial race of the series to decide Wellington's challenger for the Sanders Cup lift yacht contest at Dunedin in February* next was held last evening, and produced an excellent exhibition of racing, the issue being in doubt until well towards the finish.

The race started in a light southerly wind, Peggy, Wellesley, and All Black being the competitors. From the starting ilne, between the Clyde Quay and Taranaki Street Wharves, the course gave a run down to Coromandel Buoy, a closehaul to Jernineham Buoy, and a closehaul to the finishing line between Clyde Quay and King's Wharves. Wellesley had her spinnaker out first to port, Teggy following suit. All Black set: hers to starboard, and though well behind Wellesley at the start, with Pc£f?y third, she managed to catch Wellesley at the Lambton Wharf. Peggy was not making any impression on the leaders. Some distance from the mark, Wellesley took in her spinnaker, and All Black increased her lead, foaming along in great style. She was round the buoy 41sec before Wellesley; which beat Peggy round by 34sec. The breeze was freshening, and the advantage was with Peggy, which was sailed well to windward, and gained a little on Wellesley. All three had to make several boards to reach Jerningham Buoy. Wellesley had to give way to Peggy on the port tack, and had to make two more boards to recover her position, but Peggy did not gain much ground. She carried to leeward a lot, and going about again, got.to windward of the other two, which had to make several shore boards to make the mark. Peggy was first round from All Black by about a dozen lengths, with Wellesley a few lengths away third. Closehauled for home, Peggy gave a great display, and was an" easy winner by 47sec from All Black. Wellesley was third, a further 37sec behind". In the four trials held so far, Peggy has four times finished first, and in the other trial, which was abandoned, she was the only boat which was able to carry on. Mr. W. Duncan wu starter and time- 1 keeper of yesterday's race. ; : • The fifth trial is being held this afternoon, weather permitting.
