DELAYED BY RAIN.

PAHIATUA, 4th January.

Rain delayed the opening of the tennis tournament on New Year's Day, and a start was made on Saturday, in spite of intermittent showers, and matches continued yesterday. Both singles championships provided a full quota' of stern tusajes and left an open outlook for the semi-finals. Wilton (Paliiatua) gave Johnson (Masterton) a great three-set game in the second round of the men's singles, and M'Conachie (Feilding) fought hard against Swainson, superior courtcraft being hi* undoing. In t*e semi-finals are Swainson, Welch, Hooper, and Johnson. In the men's championship doubles. Welch and Johnson came through to the senS-finalg after a narrow victory over Wilson and Gregorie and M'Coniichie and Laws. They will meet Swaingon and Hooper in the final. The ladies' singles were keenly contested. One of the best matches of the tournament was in the third round of the combined doubles, when Mackie and Miss Arraistead (Woodville) defeated Swainson and Miss Lenz.

Rain set in at 9 o'clock this morning, and the play was postponed' till tomorrow. >
