HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
The rose show of the society will be held on Tuesday, 17th November, in the Town Hall. In spite of the backward season, an excellent; display is assured. It is anticipated that there will be keen comtstition among the suburban societies for the "Evening Post" trophy. This is at present held by St. Thomas's Society, which_ only requires one more success to win it outright. As several of the other societies have won it in past years, they are not prepared to let it go without a strong effort this year. For* the R. M. Griffiths's trophy for best exhibit among the suburban roso growers, there is sure to be keen competition, as both the competitors who have already won it once are keen tv win it again. In the pansy classes for the 24 blooms, Stewart Dawson's trophy is sure to attract a large entry of beautiful blooms. The pansy, which for Borne years was almost entirely neglected, is now as popular as ever it was, and a general favourite with flower lovers. For the 12 blooms, the B. A. Nicol trophy, at present held by Sir. W. Bull, ivill'attract a number of growers. There nill also be trade exhibits, and a display from the City Reserves and Zoo Fosery. A first-class orchestra has been engaged for afternoon and evening, and dainty afternoon tea with home-made cakes will be provided by the ladies of the society. The show will be opened by the Mayor (Mr. C. J. B. Norwood), at 3 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon.
