MR. FRASER RETAINS HIS SEAT.

Fraser .. 2390 ■ Prom the time the first result was received, shortly before half-past 7, fho result of the contest, in Wellington Central between the sitting Labour member, Mr. P. Eraser, and the Reform .candidate, Mr. Dunbar Sloane, was never in doubt, Mr.'Fraser finishing, up with a solid majority of well over 2000 votes. Altogether 8528 electors went to the trouble of voting, as against 9002 at the 1922 election. . On'that occasion there were three candidates, in the .field,, Labour (Mr. Fraser), Liberal (Mr. Siev wright); and Independent (Mr. Bennett). The anti-Labour vote totalled 3175, as against 3069 on the present occasion. ' Mr. Fraser's vote, as com pared with/that of 1922, was reduced by just under 400 votes. The first result was received by the Officer from the Boys' Institute, Tasr man street, at 7.26, and this gave Mr. Fraser. a majority of 79, and this was steadily increased as other results came to hand, the Lab on r candidate having a substantial majority at each booth, with the exception of Ghuznee street, where his lead was one of only •17, and Upper Willis street, where Mr. Sloane "aincd his one and only majority—so 3as against 500. The successful candidate.received his biggest majority at Vivian street, the principal booth, where he polled 1297 against 361 polled by Mr. Sloane. The Ecform nominee's biggest vote was recorded at Abel Smith street, where he received a total of 665, but this was discounted by a big vote by Mr. Fraser—97o; There are 406 sea-, men's rights to be counted yet, but these cannot affect the result. The IJeturning Officer (Mr., J. L. Palethorpe) and his assistants worked with commendable despatch in finalising the, result, the last return coming to hand shortly after 8 o'clock. Complete arrangements were made for the . convenience of. the Press.
