Wellington Norlh seat did not, ns was anticipated in some quarters, weaken j;he voting in favour of Sir John Luke seriously. The Beforui candidate polled 1051 more votes than his Labour opponent, and 233 more/than the combined votes, of both his opponents. The first return from Brandon street at 7.27 p.m. gave him a lead he steadily increased, and with four returns- in he had a . majority of 504 over Mr. Combs. The latter topped him only at SydDey street and Tinakori road, at both of which polling places Labour votes preponderated in 1922. s Absent votes were unobtainabk tut £Jgfcb> OS-ty
62' informal votes were cast, against 115 at the last election. Sir John's victory over the Labour candidate increased from 369 votes at las.t election to nearly five times that number, so.that the setback Labour has almost generally received was strongly marked in the North electorate. The Nationalist candidate, Mr. M'Grath, polled fewer votes than his Lib.-Lab. equivalent of .1923. Mr. Young then secured 1433 votes. Tn no. case did Mr. M'Grath lead his Labour opponent. Polling proceeded briskly, and Mr. D. - Ardell and his staff worked swiftly and without a hitch. The final result was announced at 8.40 p.m., an extra booth, compared with 1922, when 1 finality was reached at 8.20, accounting for the slight extra time. ■ The results in. detail arc as follow: • •■ ."■.I ; f ', ? : ' ■ ..' 3 . 3- . ?*■ Boulcott street . 358 581 225 Panama streot ■'. 251 504 120 Kelburn Kiosk . 134 624 • 113 Kelburn , Church ,132 318 60 Kelburn Eitn. . 54; 79 27 Lower ,Cuba-st. 396 489 138 Molesworth-st. ■■■ .■ 291" 571 95 Northland ..'.;' 153 '165 60 Brandon street . 167' . 513 100 Sydney street .. 1169 890 319 Tinakori road .. 194 154 54 Tinakori road ■ ' (St. Paul's) 225 287 107 .
