OVER ELECTION RESULT

MR. COATES'S MAJORITY

GREATEST SINCE 1905,

Quito naturally there is great elation in Reform circles over the result of yesterday's election, and, although the position in some electorates may be altered when the absentee votes are counted, the Government wiil still have an overwhelming majority over other parties, and be in a/L impregnable position. A period of four or five days may elapse before the amended totals consequent on the counting of the absentee votes are known. All the indications are, however, that the Government, will finally have a majority greater than was received by aiiy Adininistia'tion since the famous "Voucher Election" of 190 D, when the late Mr. Seddon came back from the polls with 64 Liberals against an Opposition only .16. strong. The late Mr. Jlassey was tho Leader of tho Opposition, at that. time. Mr. Seddon did uot live to meet Parliament with his colossal majority, as he died on 10th June, 1906, just prior to the oj)eningof the session. - : •■

Mr, Coates seems likely to have a clear majority of between 20 and 30.

It is possible,- too, that Mr. Holland, with Ins diminished Labour following, will disx>lace Mr. Forbes with what remains of the Nationalists, as Iho Leader of the Opposition.

■To-day tiic Prime Minister (tho Hon. il. G. Coates) was the happy recipient of hundreds of congratulatory messages from all over New Zealand.

Private cable advice was received in. Wellington to-day that a highly eulogistic leading article on Mr. Coates and the result of iho election had appeared in to-day's London "Times."
