DOUBLE TROUBLE

THE TRIALS OF FRANCE

DAMASCUS AFFAIR ON TOP OF POLITICS

PREMIER'S DIFFICULT TASK,

(UNITED PRE3S ASSOCIATION—COPIRKJHT.)

(AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, 28th October.

France is now in the throes of a double crisis, arising- out of the political situation and the Damascus disclosures. The latter produced v most painful effect hore, as well as in Trance.

Tha "Morning Post" affirms that not only financial difficulties embarrassed the lY.inleve regime, but the- long, costly war in Morocco has tried the patience of the French people. The situation in Syria has aroused suspicion and discontent, '.the. "I'ost" in an editorial predicts that th'o events in Damascus will have most seiiotLs results. The "Daily Herald" says the Socialists in the Senate and Chamber of Deputies are sure to insist on the dismissal of the guilty persons, no matter how highly placed. It is generally understood that President Doumergue has 1 commissioned M. Painleve to form a new Government, in which it is believed M. Painleve will become Finance Minister himself. The opinion has lately been stressed in Paris that whoever is the new Prime Minister of France, he must be prepared to assume the responsibility of straightening out the financial difficulties. The prospect is most uncertain in the event of M. Painleve not succeeding. M. Herriotb and M. Briand are both reluctant to quit their present posts. It is considered most likely that the reassembly o£ the Senate and Chamber on Thursday will he postponed.
