VICE-REGAL.
Their . Excellencies the Governor-Gen-eral and Lady Alice Fergusson returned to Wellington on Saturday from Hawkes Bay. This evening (Monday) they will be present at a. social gathering at Victoria University College, which Sir Ernest Rutherford will attend. On Wednesday His Excellency will inspect the Ist Cadet Battalion (Wellington College), Wellington Regiment, in training, and in the evening Their Excellencies leave for tho South Island.
Mr. Cuiford Bell, who acted as a judge at the Hamilton competitions, returned to Wellington to-day.
Tho funeral of the late Mr. William Ryan took place on Saturday. There was a large and representative attendance. A service was held at the Basilica, Hill street, after which the remains wore'interred a 6 Karori Cemetery in the presence of a large assemblage. Rev. leather Gilbert, Rector of St. Patrick's College, conducted the ceremony fit tho graveside.
. Mr. Alfred Court, tho youngest of five brothers, all well known in Auckland,, died' at Thames on Thursday, aged 71 years. Mr. Court came to New Zealand later than his brothers, but, like them, continued .in the drapery business. Born at Bradley Urcen, near Uedditch, Worcestershire, in 1805, lie was educated nt Fcckeuhain nr 1 apprenticed as a draper in Birmingham, where he was in business with :t partner for two years, and afterwards for five years with a brother in Coleshill street, Birmingham. Mr. Court took over the business on bis own account in 1870 and conducted it. until 1800', when ho came to New Zealand. 110 settled at Thames! and established the business -in Pollen tstreet, which still bears his name. For four years bet'oro coining to New Zealand, Mr. Court wns London buyer for the old Auckland firm of Court Bros. Of recent years Mr. Court left the aotivo conduct of his business to his only son, Mr. Alfred Court.
