WELLINGTON CLUB

OPENING OF THE SEASON. ;. Saturday was the thirty-ninth anniversavy of the formation of the Wellington Bowling Club, and the occasion was marked by the opening of the club's greeim for the season. Unfortunately, the heavy rain on Friday and on Saturday morning made the greens unfit for play, but this did not deter a largo number of members and their ladies, as well as visitors from other clubs, attending the cereniony, ■which was carried out in fine but; cold, breezy ivcathcr. Amongst those present wore Sir John Luke, a. former member of the club,' and air. S. M. StonC? president of the Welling, ton. Bowling Centre. Mr. H. U. Mayer, president of. the Wellington Bowling Club, extended v hearty welcome to all present, saying that he was pleased to see such 11 large gathering considering the state of the weather. The members' of the club were looking forward to participating in inter-club competitions with the members of other clubs during the season. The younger generation of bowlers belonging to the club felt that they owed a deep debt of gratitude to those members who laid the foundations, of such a beautiful property, and 'they were pleased to have still amongst them so many of thoso early membors who had done so much to make the club what ifc was to-day. In that connection Mr. Mayer mentioned the name of Mr. :. Louis Bluudell, who was s, foundation member of the club. Mr. Mayer also referred to Mr. C. Smith, j who, unfortunately, had been ill for j it considerable time, but who, he wag. very pleased to say, had greatly Jinproved, and was expected to be about again soon. The good -wishes of the members of the club were also extended to Mr. W. Muir, who, too, was onta of the oldest members of the club. ' The present season, because of the impending visit of tho British bowl, crs, would be a. "red letter" one for bowlers. The directors of tho Wellington Club were lookiug forward to the members giving their' whole-hearted support in. helping to make the stay of the visitors in Wellington a pleasant one, and memorable from every point of view. The prondent thought that members would agree that tho greens were looking • better than they had done for a good many years. He apologised on behalf of several members, and presidents of tho Wanganui, Feilding, and, Christchurch Clubs who were unable to be present, and voiced the regret of all at the deaths of several members since last season. Mr. Mayer then called on ' Sir John Luke, who .joined in regretting the passing of some of the veteran bowlers belonging to the club. Ho spoke of the hospitality which always was a. feature of, the Welling-,' lon Bowling Cliib, and concluded by wishing the club and its membors. every success during tho season. Mr. Stone, the president of tho centre, voiced the thanks of the delegates to the centre for always setting apart the clubhouse for their u«e when required, and for the way an. which the Wellington, Club was always ready to assist. the game in, Wellington. He"referred to the Brit* ish bowlers' visit, and how tho vari» ouß clubs were intending to vie with, ona another in entertaining the visitors, and wished tho club an enjoyable season, At the conclusiou of Mr. Stone's remarks, the gathering sang the National Anthem, and Mrs. Mayer threw up the silver jack presented to tho club by Mr. H. G. Smith for use on opening days. The remainder of the afternoon was spent in dancing and music, a delicious afternoon tea adding tp the njoyment of the occasion.
