LOWER HUTT

PROGRESS LEAGUE

ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS

The annual meeting of the league was held at the Town Hall on Thursday evening. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr. Charles B. Buxton; vice-presidents, Dr. C. J. Reakes, Messrs. E. P. Bunny, H. Baldwin, and G. A. Chapman; committee. Dr. B. J. Dudley, Messrs. D. C. Bews, M. J. Cameron, S. Clendon, D. Gostelow, Stewart Henderson, A. Jarman, F. Jenness, E. J. Norman, D. D. Robertson, W. H. Smith, and R. J. Shearer; hon. secretary, Mr. D. C. Martin hon. auditor, Mr. C. W. Mason. The secretary was asked to ascertain from the Borough Council the expected date of completion of the new baths in Riddiford Park, and to urge the necessity of the baths being opened.in time to secure as long a season as possible for the forthcoming summer. It was resolved that the River Board be requested to thoroughly clean the Waiwetu Stream at the earliest practical opportunity. The executive was asked to ascertain from the Government what was being done in regard to drainage of the area recently acquired for subdivision purposes. It was pointed out that the auc; cess of the scheme very largely depends upon a thoroughly comprehensive scheme oi drainage. At the present time a considerable amount of the land is very wet, but being of a deep loamy nature will become just as dry as any other portion of the Valley, provided a comprehensive drainage scheme is properly carried out. BUS SERVICES. Discussion ensued, regarding the running of tho bus servi'de to and from the trains and to and from Wellington. It was agreed that the Wellington service is very good, excepting that there is a distinct lack of co-operation amongst the bus proprietors regarding a definite time-table. Three buses frequently leave on one trip, and only. ono on tho following trip. The • bus service to and from the trains waa subject to severe comment on the part of many speakers, and it was pointed out that until such time as the Department arranged for more buses to connect with the trains the service must be subject to severe handicap, as residents do not care to go out by train and then have to walk home, as the bus service is inadequate for the number requiring to be carried. The executive was requested to do all possible to induce improved conditions in. both railway and road service between the borough and the city, a's it is recognised that.a thoroughly good service is of much value to the residents. Matters affecting the public library were considered, and a committee was set up to .act in conjunction with the Library Committee of the Borough Council to increase the popularity of the municipal library. A circular was recently issued ■ which has had good ra- . suits, and no doubt" when the excellence oi the library is more widely known it will become much more popular than at present. A committee- was formed for the purpose of assisting the Municipal Band in a scheme to pay off the balance of its indebtedness. Congratulatory comments were made regarding the band, and it was felt by'all that it will be a pleasure to help to put it on a thoroughly good footing financially.
