NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION

THE DAVIS OTJP CONTEST,

The annual meeting of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association waa held last night in Accountants' Chambers. Mr, Jj. Denniston presided.

The report stated that the majority of lisaociations were in a proud position, and further development in tho matter of aagrounds was .assured. Three iiew district associations hare been Stormed—Nelson, North Auckland, and jWairarapa, The Davis Cup contest had '■fcot been entered, owing to the prohibitive coat of sending a New Zealand team. {The success of Wellington in the New Zealand championships was drawn attention to, also the winning by Wellington of the Anthony Wilding Challenge Cup. Dealing with association and club tournaments, the report stressed the advisability of associations, in their own interests, preventing the holding of unau- '. thorised open '■/wrnnments, and urging their members not to compote in them. The financial 'statement showed an increase in subscriptions, and a reduction in management expenses. An excess of income over expenditure of £190 4a was eltown for tho year. The chairman, speaking of the Davis Cup, said that the allowance to members would have to be considered if a team were sent. The association could not hopo to leach the allowances made by Australian associations, which were co high as almost to make a professional put of a purely amateur sport. The report and balance-sheet were ■adopted. General satisfaction was expressed at the return of Nelson to the- association, end Nelson, North Auckland, and Wai■rarapa were duly affiliated. Foden asked, in view of the projected visit of tho French players to Australia next season, did the Management Committee proposo to go into the question of sending over to Australia a team of selected young players? The matter will be referred to the committee. A- letter from the Sports Protection League proposing the inception of daylight savinsr, and asking the association to circularise clubs requesting them' to seek a pledge to support it Irom their members at next election, aroused discuseion. It wns stated that when daylight saving was in force in France it had bean eaid that neither the farmers nor animals seemed to bo aware of it. (Laughter;) Another hour'B daylight, said a member, would be invaluable towards the end of the season. It was decided that the committee bo invited to discuss the- advisability of circnlarising 'till .clubs requesting them to place the question before their respective candidates. ■ , .
