Mr. F. Tate, who was a member of the- University Education Commission, left for Sydney to-day by the Ulimaroa.
The Hon. T. W. Hislop was granted a week's leave of absence from the Legislative Council yesterday on account of illness.
Mr. W. ,H. Tripe, general manager of the Gear Meat Preserving Company, was a passenger by the Ulimaroa for Sydney to-day.
At the annual meeting of the N.Z. Society of Accountants Mr. Reginald Davis, of Palmerston North, was elected president, and Mr. A. M. Seamap, of Auckland, elected vice-president.
The City Engineer of Christchurch, Mr. Galbraith, and Councillor Andrews, chairman of the Works Committee of the Christchurch Council, have paid visits to Auckland and Wellington, with a view to inquiring' into methods followed in Corporation work. Mr. Andrews returned to Christchurch last evening, and Mr. Galbraith will go South this evening.
At the annual meeting of the Institute of Accountants of New Zealand yesterday, Mr. A. 0. Wilkinson, of Christchurch, was promoted from Associate to Fellow. The following were admitted as Associates : —Messrs. E. Cannons (Wellington), F. N. Cunningham (Masterton), L. C. A. Byers, W.. H. Larcombe, F. H. MAuley, and N. Walker (Christchurch), R. W. Priest (Palmerston North), N. Webley (Dannevirke), and E. T. White (Auckland).
Information was received in Wellington to-day of the death a* Wanganui of Mr. Tom Macdermott (Harold Carr). Many years ago Mr. Macdermott adopted the stage as his profession and assumed the name of Harold Carr, by which he was well known throughout New Zealand and Australia. He was associated with companies under the management of Bland Holt" (with whom he remained for a considerable period) and J. C. Williamson. In latter years he was connected with the moving picture side of entertainment, and was. at one time general manager in New Zealand for Fox Films. Just recently he returned from a visit to New York. On' Friday last he left here, for Wanganui, where he had purchased a business. At the time he. was suffering from the effects of a severe cold^ which turned to pneumonia. His sister,. Miss Macdermott, left for Wanganui - thi3 morning.
