THE DAY IN PARLIAMENT
The business of the House of Representatives yesterday fell under three main heads—meat works, immigration, and the circulation of blasphem- j cus pamphlets, allegedly for electioneering purposes. The Prime Minister introduced early in the afternoon sitting the report of the Lysnar Commission, but discussion upon the de- , cisions of the Commissioners was deferred until members have had an opportunity of perusing the bulky document. Tho presentation of tho annual report of tho Immigration Department gave members an opportunity of criticising freely the Government's policy in connection with that subject, which proved so popular that it occupied the remainder of the afternoon. Members' verbosity found further flow in a stream of indefinite width—because of the latitude of debate permitted—when' the monthly Imprest Supply Bill was introduced in tho evening. The Labour members devoted themselves almost exclusively to the immigration question and to a subject which received some prominence last session—Socialist Sunday schools and the doctrines said to be | taught in them. Many speeches were devoted to condemning the distribution of leaflets containing hymn parodies, which, it was said, fell into the hands of children with undesirable results. Apparently satisfied that theo' subject had been sufficiently ventilated, shortly before 1 a.m., members allowed the prolonged discussion to lapse, and the Bill went through the final formalities without ' interrup- | tion. The Minister of Labour (the Hon. G. J. Anderson) then pleaded urgency for the Kent Restriction Continuance Bill, which extends the operation of the war legislation in respect to rent restriction for a further twelve months, and the measuro was put through without meeting any hurdles. Tho House rose a!; 1.10 a.m.'
