AMERICAN TRADE OUTLOOK.

In a brief survey of political and Industrial conditions within and beyond the United States, the National Bank of Commerce, In New York (dated 20th July), reports that, although there Is a singular coincidence of favourable factors, 6tIII there are uncertainties of which due cognisance must be taken. Fir6t of them Is the fact that even yet the cotton and corn crops might prove disappointing. "The second possibility Is the development of adverse conditions in other countries with consequent unfavourable reactions here." Reference Is made to the RlB and China troubles; itill. the International situation is viewed as seemingly comparatively stable, "but the lesson* of 1914 have taught the business men of the United States the ever-present necessity of watching for storm clouds on the horison." British Industrial aotivity is described as at ft low ebb and unemployment is materially higher than a year ago. Business is far from satisfactory In Germany, Belgium, Poland, and Czecho-Slovakia, and only moderately good in France. In Italy manufacturing activity Is unabated. "The third hazard to which this autumn's prosperity may yet be exposed it the disrupting Influence of labour troubles. Differences between coal miners and operators are yet to be settled. It Is expected that railway unions will make demands for higher wages this autumn."
