Watt, Speaker of the House of Representatives, announced that if he was returned Tie would not accept that office in the new Parliament. He thought it would be hi the best interests of his constituents and. himself if he returned to the controversial arena.

The Right Hon. William Alexander Watt, who has been Speaker of the Federal House of Representative since 1923, has had Ministerial rank in the Victorian and Federal Legislatures, with intervals, since 1899. He was Treasurer of Victoria from 1909 till 1914, and Premier from 1912 to 1914; when he resigned and entered the Federal House. He was Federal Minister for Works and Railways in 1917-18, Commonwealth Treasurer 1918-20, and ■ Acting-Prime Minister in 1918-19.
