A PLEASANT FUNCTION
The Wellington Ladies' Auxiliary of the London Missionary Society held its annual "at home" on Wednesday, in the Newtown Congregational School Hall. The Rev. Frank de Lisle presided. . A feature of the occasion was the singing of several anthems by the choirs of the local Congregational Churches. The Terrace Choir (Mr. Len Barnes) sang "Agnus Dei" (Gounod), and "The Day is Gently Sinking to a Close" ; Cambridge Terrace (Mr. T. Forsyth), "King of Kings" (Simper), and "Hosanna in the Highest" (Stainer); .Newtown (Mr. A. M. Lewis), "God is a Spirit." Mrs. Lewis sang the solo, "How Lovely are Thy Dwellings." The Rev. Ernest R. Weeks gave an inspiring talk on the glamour and attractiveness of .missionary service, and gave many instances of his personal experiences in Demarara. It had always been his ambition to tell (he Gospel story to those who' had never heard it told. Sometimes, said the speaker, we are asked, is it worth while —why not leave the heathen alone? But when one has been close to it, and has smelt the very breath of heathendom, and had come up its sticky wickedness, one reahaed that even from the humanitarian standpoint alone these people should be saved. The heathen was the Lazarus at our door. Mr. Weeks expressed his pleasure that yet another was leaving for the mission field from the local church, and he made a final appeal for volunteers for this great service. After the Benediction, supper was served, and the stalls we're patronised, the proceeds being for the L.M.S.
