STREET WORKS
THE SAME OLD DIFFICULTY.
Remark was made by Councillor Meadowcroffc at last evenihg's meetiilg of the City Council of the fact that already, during the first four , months of the year, no less than £45,362 had been spent of the total of £66 ; 865 6et aside for road works for the year. If expenditure continued at the same- rate the position would be that the council could carry on for 'the ilext two months, but for the last six months of the year there would be no money for street works at all. The Mayor (Mr. 0. B. Norwood) said that it was true that expenditure upon street works had been heavy; expenses for labour which had previously averaged out at about £900 per week had recently risen to £1400 per week. The council, as he had gauged the position, would be faced with the necessity of. obtaining approximately £90,000 for street works, for there were many works which were absolutely essential and which could riot be delayed. The position would be relieved when the workmen were again engaged in bituminous paving. The Finance Committee would shortly bring down a report upon the whole position. Councillor H. ft. Bennett remarked that'the same position arose every year, though this year it appeared to be more marked, fie agreed that the position would be eased when loan works were under way.
