LATE SPORTING

WELLINGTON RACING CLUB NEW SECEETARY APPOINTED. Mr. J. M. Griffiths, who has been acting temporarily, has been appointed secretary of the Wellington Racing Club. Mr. Griffiths was deserving of the position, for in actual length of service he had more to his credit than the late Mr. A. E. Whyte. Mr. Griffiths was an employee of the club in the old days of Hutt Park, and assisted Mr. Whyte a very great deal both in obtaining the Trentham property and then in forming the present racecourse. It will thus be seen that no outsider could possibly have such a complete knowledge of the workings of the club. Mr. Griffiths has act-' ed as assistant secretary for many minor racing clubs in this part of the island, and his very complete knowledge of the running of a meeting has proved invaluable to the honorary officials. His promotion to his present position will mean a loss to them which they will feei keenly.
