ALLEGED BURGLARY AT

HATAITAI.

. A recent episode at Hataitai was investigated at the Magistrate's Court today, when George Frederick Murphy, a Miiori salesman, aged 30, was- charged with breaking and entering by day, the house of May Millar, and with stealing two rings,, valued at £50.

Senior Detective Cameron prosecuted. ■ Evidence was given by Mrs. Millar to tlie effect that when she returned to her home at 72, Waipapn, road on the afternoon of 6tli July, sho found two rings missing from her jewel box.

Walter Edward Chisholm, Thomas Fortune, and Arthur Avery described the strugglo Murphy made when he was questioned as to what he was doing on .Mrs. Millar's premises. Chisholm said, while passing 72, Waipapa road, he observed Murphy near one of the windows of Mrs. Millar's house, and upon investigation found him tip-toeing about the house. The witness said he secured assistance, but Murphy made his escape by jumping the next door fence. Rupert Cecil Wood, a salesman residing next door to Mrs. Millar, deposed to finding"ono of Mrs. Millar's rings on his front lawn on 15th July.. •. William Dickson Kerr, a, postman, gave evidence of having seen the accused in the vicinity of Hataitai road on 6th July.

Detective M'Lerman said that when arrested . at Carterton on 13th July, Murphy denied all knowledge of the rings.

The accused, who was represented by Mr. A. V. Sievwright, pleaded jiot guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
