UPPER HUTT TOWN BOARD
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING.
The fortnightly meeting of the Upper Hutt Town Board was .held last evening, when Commissioner A. J. M 'Curdy presided over a full attendance of members. A letter was received from the Prime Minister stating thijtt when the estimates were being considered the matter of a new Court-houso for Upper Hutt would receive attention.' A resident wrote asking the board to construct an approach to his house. The matter was referred to the Works Committee with powsr to act. The Railway Board wrote in reply to a letter sent by the Town Board, saying that it would send a member of its commercial department to meet the board at a date to be arranged, to consider the question of a zonal system of train fares between Upper Hutt and Silverstream. Commissioner Jones raised the question of making a street through between Queen street and the Main road. Commissioner Jones moved, and Commissioner Burrell seconded, that, in addition to reporting on the petitions referred to them, the Works Committee confer with residents of Hay, Logan, and Sinclair streets, and inquire from land owners prices for land connecting Logan street with Queen stroet, and Queen street with the Main road. CommissJonor Greenwood moved, and Commissioner Francis seconded, a motion to the effect that the Post and Telegraph Department should either restore, or pay the cost of restoring, footpaths which it was stated had been cut up by them. . Commissiouer Blewman "Btated that he had had complaints made to him concerning the sanitary service. The chairman said that if any residents had' complaints t.o make they should make them in writing to the board; otherwise they could not receive attention. Commissioner Burrell said that noxious weeds were Gaining a strong foothold in the district. The Town Clerk outlined his method of procedure when dealing with persons who failed to keep their properties clean. He had been very busy with the rates, and had not had time to deal with the matter fully. Commissiouer Burrell : "If a man owns a piece of land he should look after it, and not other people." Ho though the Town Clerk had to spend too much timo on matters like this. It was decided that the Town Clerk determine what steps he intended* to • tako when timo offered, and outline them to i the board at its next meeting. ■ i
