TWO YOUNG MEN SENTENCED
"It nppeavs that nothing 'but imprisonment .will put down this offence of using other people's 'property,", said Chief Detective Kemp at the Magistrate's Court this morning, when Alfred Victor Smith,"'a labourer (30); and James Peter Walker; a ,storeman (29). were charged with unlawfully, converting to their own use a motor-car, valued at £800, the property of Frank Goldberg. On Friday last, at 8.p.m., continued tho Chief Detective, Mr. Goldberg left his car outside the.Civic League rooms in Johnston street, and found it missing when he returned about 10 p.m. Tho two accused were seen about 11 p.m. driving the car* in the direction of the Hutt Valley, anil on Saturday morning the vehicle was found at-"Upper. Hutt in a damaged condition. The number plates appeared to have been .wrenched off, and the radiator and the near tail-light 1 were smashed. The total damage was estimated at £100. "Walker was before the Court in "November last,'and was fined 10s for carrying on a bookmaker's business. The other man is married, with two children, and I understand he has a maintenance order against him," concluded the Chief Detective. • '.'.'■ -
Each of tho accused -was sentenced to two.months' imprisonment.
