THE HOUSING PROBLEM
TO THB EDITOR,
j ?f~y^r correspondent, Mr. B W. iT°i? ta,Ik). b?lieve« that small houses could built in concreto, or other last■Mg.mat«nal, ft a very moderate price it they were all built od one plan Such houses would be cleanly and healthy dwellings, but would it not' be possible to bmld_them in a more ai-fcistio way without incurring much, more '-expense. There aye at present in Wellington many streets and terraces with wooden build--mgs, built-in uniform, designs, and the I effect of :rows_ and rows of houses built exactly alike is depressing and unpleas- ' whS-i ° £ h-j= ya< -^ould lfc nofc te better, while buildmjr m lasting material, to vary the designs somewhat, so that our city might bo made beautiful as well as cleanly and healthy. 4 s J'' a '™ fate are concerned, they aw all right for adults, but not for chit ■ dren. People with families should have their own ;houses, for rooms or flats are most unsatisfactory homes for children, in rooms there is a certain amount of restriction, and sometimes lack of conveniences and privacy, and where there are one or two families of children in a house there is always trouble of some sort. Booms with, kitchenettes attached are usually too expensive for the, person of small means. Where there is mutual good.feeling and consideration between landlady ..and tenants, it is possihle to live with a degree of comfort, but there are- people who let rooms who are neither honourable or kindly, and who make life intolerable for their tenants. Adults may adapt themselves to their surround- '?,% \l\ utterly impossible for children to do so. It is almost impossible to bring up children decently or with comfort in rooms or flats. I am sure everyone will be pleased when new homes _.are built for those who are so much in.need of them.—l am, etc., „,,, - A ROOMER. 25th June.
