A PACIFIC CONFERENCE
PROPOSED BY V.M.C.A.
The general secretary of the V.M.C. A. NT New Zealand (Mr.:'A. .Variiey) ,ha» been advised of a proposal to hold d conference, to deal in the main; with facial relationships of. the .'peoples of the Pacific, at Honolulu from Ist,to 15th July. Mr. Variiey stated in' an interx? e« '-} , f * for •'■■ so™e y«ars past the X-™-.V- A- had been contemplating;the holding of a big conference somewhere in the Pacific, and out of that had grown the idea of going; a good deal further than the discussion of the work of the association and its ideals. (which would eliminate political and ' religious discussion). From.a group of prominent business, men of Honolulu had developed the -idea of, calling- a conference, Which would in thecourse of its deliberations attempt to bring about a better and fuller understanding of the national ideals and aspirations of the various races whose territories impinged upon the waters of the. Pacific, such. as the United States of America, Canada, Mexico, Japan^ China,; -East Indies. Australia, New Zealand, arid possibly' the Pacific countries of South America. The object of endeavouring to bring together representative brains, from all these countries was to promote peace, and to refute the idea of some prophets that the next big war would besought in the Pacific. This' was based on the thesis that no country really wanted to. go to war, and that wars were only brought about by colossal misunderstandings. It was hoped, that each of, the major countries would.be represented by some twenty delegates— picked; for their ability and integrity.Mr. Varney.hopes that the delegates from New Zealand will include two; nominated , by-the Government, and at-least, one representing the Press, besides other leaders of thought m the professions and trades. So far no delegates -have been selected to represent- New .Zealand, but within the next few?.months-.-it is hoped that arrangements will be made to send a thoroughly representative and reliable delegation from the Dominion. ■■■■■•.'■■■■ ,
