SETTLEMENT ANNOUNCED

TUG EMPLOYEES' WAGES

RAISED

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.— COPYRIGHT.)

(Received 17th December, 10 a.m.)

PERTH, This Day. At the conclusion of a meeting of seamen, it was announced that a settlement had been reached in the local strike. In some instances tug employees will receive increases of £2 per week.

The shipping dispute at Perth appears to have been quite distinct from that which originated in Sydney over the bureau labour system. The first trouble tli ere arose m connection with the steamer VoJumnia, a ship which was under charter to the Commonwealth Line, ihe crew struck to "enforce a demand that-.they should be placed on Australian articles, which would give them higher wages. Some time later, a serious hold-up occurred in connection with the claims of the Fremantle branch of tlio Seamen's Union for a new award, which had been under discussion for about three months. Towards the end of November the men decided to cease work till an agreement was reached, and the decision to stop the work of the port was put into operation by preventing the ships from being handled by pilots, and refusing to berth the vessels at _ the wharves. These tactics resulted in completely paralysing the port activities at Fremantle.
